Dear Franklin & Grand Isle residents,

On behalf of the Franklin Grand Isle United Way Board of Directors, we are excited to share with you a new, focused approach to increase the capacity of people to care for one another. As we enter our 29th annual campaign, we recognize that money alone will not solve our community's most serious problems. Bold new steps are required to create lasting change.

In the past few years, we have expanded our traditional role as a fundraiser to include Community Solutions. This "Move to Impact" is a proactive approach to assessing our community's needs by forming partnerships to address problems and issues. Our measure of success is the degree to which we impact community conditions and improve people's lives.

To build a better community now and for the future, we will continue to emphasize outcome measurement and accountability, but we must also focus strongly on underlying causes of the most serious problems faced by our community. We will continue our work to provide a strategic context within which to identify and address our community's most critical issues surrounding families and individuals, children and youth, basic needs, and health and healing.

We look forward to an era of great collaboration. By partnering with other community organizations and businesses, teaming with service providers and joining forces with leaders and volunteers, we help identify and work to solve needs that affect people living in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties.

We are excited by the opportunities presented by our impact strategies. This model allows United Way to take on new roles including convener, facilitator, collaborator, and advocate. It expands our scope to include addressing root causes and bringing about systemic changes that have a measurable impact on people's lives.

We invite you to explore this special publication and learn more about how your local United Way, in collaboration with community partners, is making a positive impact in our two county region.

Our vision is that Franklin and Grand Isle Counties are made up of vibrant, active and caring communities. When you volunteer your time, money or talents in our community, you are making this vision a reality. Thank you. Together, we do what matters.

Sincerely,

Mary Lynn Riggs
Board President

A Message from Mike Curtis, Campaign Chair

The United Way is the premier organization seeking to not only address today's community uses but to define and meet those of tomorrow. The money generously contributed by all of us in the community will not only fund the positive work performed by our member agencies but also make those strategic investments that provide positive community impact and address our community's emerging needs.

I was excited to be asked to Chair this year's Franklin-Grand Isle United Way Campaign. I have personally benefited from the programs and agencies that are supported by our United Way and it is my pleasure to give back through my personal support of this year's Campaign. The United Way is not just about providing money to community organizations, but creating community coalitions, stimulating community action, engaging more of us to become volunteers and providing the leadership and vision to create the best community for all of us in the Northwest Lake Champlain region.

Pacesetters Lead the Way

The United Way is grateful to the following companies and organizations for beginning their employee campaigns early and setting the tone for our annual campaign:

2007 Pacesetters
  • Area Schools
  • Citizen's Bank
  • City of St. Albans
  • Energizer
  • IBM
  • Northwestern Medical Center
  • RockTenn
  • People's Trust Company Community Partners Golf Tournament
  • The Tyler Place
  • United Way Board & Staff

Loaned Executives Boost Impact

The United Way partners with local businesses to recruit professionals for the Loaned Executive program. Loaned Executives (LE's) use a portion of their work week to support the United Way's annual campaign. LE's are paid for their time by their employer. We are grateful to Hickok & Boardman, Lyndon Bank, and Central Vermont Public Service for supporting this year's Loaned Executives.

The United Way gains the unique benefit of extra staff during a busy time of year without the extra costs, while LE's build community relationships, and gain training in project management and presentation skills.

"I recently joined the team of Hickok & Boardman. I learned about the needs of the campaign as our company is very active with United Way. When asked if I would be interested in helping during the campaign, I knew it was an opportunity to participate in a worthy cause," - Amber Fairbanks, Hickok & Boardman.

"I have volunteered to help with the United Way's 2007 Campaign to help make a difference in our communities. No one should go hungry, unclothed or unsheltered. Together, we can make a difference," - Jerry Pion, Lyndon Bank.

"At first I thought I may be too busy to volunteer, but then I thought, 'If a person isn't willing to challenge themselves, then they have to settle for mediocrity.' I'm up for the challenge and I'll give it my all," - Bob Morey, Central Vermont Public Service Corporation
