Tax Preparation - Lite!

United Way could use your help ! Volunteers are needed to assist low income Vermonters with tax preparation this season.

If you've been interested in helping others with Tax Preparation but have been reluctant to jump in because you're unsure of the expertise required, wait no more! The FastTax program allows lower income residents (primarily those eligible for the EITC) an opportunity to complete their own taxes for free online when they are aided by a volunteer at a designated IRS FastTax site. Volunteers help them determine if they're eligible for the service, help with computer use questions, show them how to log in to the program's software (TurboTax), answer basic tax questions as they arise, ensure they've answered all questions on the return, and help print a copy of their filed return - more of a facilitator than a tax preparer!

Some training is required to be certified in basic tax info which is completed online (4-6 hrs or so) and attending a volunteer meeting at your site to become familiar with the set up and process.

The IRS is teaming up with United Way to offer sites throughout Franklin and Grand Isle County from early February through mid-April. We'll help make a schedule around your available hours. Ideally we'd like volunteers for 3-4 hours possibly 1 day a week (or more!) Sites will be specific libraries and schools and there will be at least two volunteers together at each site. Equipment and training is provided, we just need helpful folks who understand how daunting taxes can seem the first time you fill out a form yourself! We know TurboTax will be a great way for people to gain confidence to do their own taxes through this program, and with your help, we can ensure more eligible families in our area are able to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit.
